Local Mission
Shallowford members are very active in the local community. Opportunities for local service include:
Food Pantry
For the past 21 years, Shallowford has provided emergency food to individuals and families. These persons generally come from a referral from United Way or another agency. The number of people obtaining this assistance has increased every year. The Food Pantry is stocked with food donated by church members and from monies allocated in the annual budget. In addition, outside groups using our church facilities are asked to donate food.
Habitat for Humanity This nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Shallowford has participated in Habitat builds for over twenty years. We have just completed building a house in Tucker in partnership with Decatur First United Methodist Church and the Habitat chapter at Tucker High School.
Druid Hills Night Shelter
Druid Hills Night Shelter, located at the Druid Hills Presbyterian Church, provides supper and a place to spend the night for 30 homeless working men. They are allowed to live there for a few months in the winter so they can save money to rent their own apartment. Shallowford volunteers cook and serve dinner every Wednesday plus one Friday of each month from October through March. The volunteers absorb the cost of the meals. Read what some of our members say about their experiences at the night shelter in Shallowford's Newsletter (July 2009, page 7). Contact Carolyn Fairey for more information and to volunteer.
Interfaith Outreach Home
Interfaith Outreach Home, a non-profit organization, is located in Doraville. It provides housing, counseling, and support to intact families who have lost their ability to support themselves and afford housing at the same time. Families can live at this facility for up to 6 months and counseling is available to help them find jobs. Shallowford sponsors an annual trip to Lake Lanier Islands Christmas show for the families. Our chancel choir sponsors a Christmas gift and there are many other volunteer opportunities available here.
Benevolence Market On a Sunday in November, Shallowford invites over 15 charitable, social and non-profit groups to set up a table and tell us about their mission. Everyone attending Sunday School and church that day has the opportunity to provide Christmas gifts to family and friends via contributions to these organizations. Shoppers receive gift cards to let recipients know a gift has been made in their honor. The 2009 Benevolence Market is on November 22. You may purchase gifts using the Benevolence Market shopping list through December 24.
Networks Cooperative Christian Ministries
NETWorks is a cooperative Christian ministry with persons in need in the Northlake-Embry Hills-Tucker area. NETWorks is comprised of a group of churches, groups, businesses and individuals committed to assist in meeting urgent needs related especially to housing and utilities.
Utilizing community and partner church resources, NETWorks' is working to create a "safety net that works." This safety net includes material assistance, advocacy, spiritual assistance, and referral to other appropriate agencies and services, including the N.E.T. Food Pantry."
