Music In Our Worship

Music is certainly a very important part of worship and is integral to the life of Shallowford Presbyterian Church. We are proud of our rich tradition, yet continue to explore new things. Whether you enjoy music from the pews during worship or you participate by singing, ringing, or playing an instrument, we hope that music helps you encounter the mystery of God.

Music for Adults

The Chancel Choir leads 11 o’clock worship every Sunday morning. In addition, the Chancel Choir presents a Christmas music service (usually on the second Sunday of Advent) and a special music service in the spring. These services feature a variety of music from regular church anthems to major works such as Handel’s Messiah, Haydn ’s The Creation, and various settings of Requiem.
The Chancel Choir rehearsals are 7:30 – 9:30 pm on Thursdays in the Sanctuary..

The Chancel Choir Retreat at Calvin Retreat Center is an important choir activity. (Choir members begin a year in advance finding babysitters for the weekend!) Playing and eating is just about as important as rehearsing on the retreat and everyone has a wonderful time. An outstanding guest conductor is with the choir to conduct all retreat rehearsals. Allen Pote, Paul Oakley, Al Callabrese, and Uzee Brown have been guest conductors for past retreats.

Music for Youth and Adults

The Shallowford Orchestra rehearses and plays two to three times a year. The orchestra is open to musicians from tenth grade through adult.

Music for Youth

Chapel Choir is composed of 60-70 youth from grades 7–12. Reading music is definitely not a requirement for Chapel Choir. In fact, you don’t have to know anything about music to belong to the choir. The Chapel Choir meets on Sunday afternoons in the Choir Room, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm. Snacks are served at 4:00 pm in the choir room beside the church office. A highlight of Chapel Choir is an annual summer tour. On these tours the choir has sung in 24 states, several Canadian provinces, Scotland, and England. Additional special events include:

Adopted Family–In 1997 the choir "adopted" a family of a mother and young son. Each year the choir celebrates special times and continues to help the family in various ways.

Christmas Tree Sale – funds from the sale are used to help finance tour and benevolence projects.

Luminaria–The choir places, lights, and retrieves the luminaria for the Christmas Eve service.

Music For Children

Shallowford Presbyterian offers a complete children's choir ministry beginning with our youngest songbirds. In choir, our children learn the elements of music, the joy of singing together in a group, and commitment. They also learn to use their gifts and talents to serve God through music.

Cherub Choir Sunday, 11:20 am - 12:00 pm 3,4,5 yr. olds
Trinity Choir Sunday,  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm 1-3 grades
Westminster Choir Sunday,  5:00 pm - 6:00 pm  4-6 grades
Westminster Bell Choir Wednesday,  5:00 pm  - 6:00 pm 4-6 grades

Cherub Choir consists age 3 through kindergarten children. In this choir children are introduced to the delightful world of music. They learn the elements of music and sing songs about God's love for them. The choir explores singing in their head voice, keeping a steady beat, moving to music, and playing a variety of instruments. Cherub Choir meets during Sunday morning worship (11:00 am Service). Children go to choir following the “Time for Children”, and they dismiss when worship concludes.

Trinity Choir consists of 1st through 3rd graders. This choir begins to take singing together more seriously while still having a fun time together. Becoming a musician and perfecting unison singing is the goal of this choir. The choir sings many hymns of the faith, learns creative movement to the Psalms, reviews service music and anthems, and sings regularly in worship. Emphasis is on developing singing skills and loving to sing. Music is one of the many creative ways to worship God and serve God in His church.

Trinity Choir meets on Sunday afternoons 4:00 – 5:00 pm in the Children’s Choir Room.

Westminster Choir consists of 4th through 6th graders. This choir continues to work on unison singing, but moves quickly to two part singing. Lessons in harmony and blending together in choir become life lessons the children can take with them through life. This group works very hard to prepare for worship. This group also "Plays Hard." There are fall retreats, trips to Ci Ci's pizza parlor, music and drama camp, overnight summer music camp and other "rewards" for the time commitment they make.

The success of our children's choir ministry depends on parent volunteers to help with robe assignments, worship assistants, party planners, drivers and more. Please ask Ann how you can help!

Westminster Choir meets on Sunday afternoons 5:00 – 6:00 pm in the Children’s Choir Room.

Westminster Bell Choir consists of 4th through 6th graders. A music background is not necessary to join this choir, but joining early in the fall is essential to learning the fundamentals of music. By the end of the year, all choir members know the basics and can read music. They meet Wednesdays 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
