- The Kalb Story: A Peasant Boy, Baron, Soldier, Spy, and Hero
DeKalb County is named in honor of Johann Kalb, a peasant born in Huttendorg, Germany. Five
other counties in the United States also honor Kalb. The "De" in his name signifies "of royalty,"
which in Kalb's case is only partially true, but then that's a key part of this tale! Kalb fought in but
one major battle during our Revolution. The battle was lost and he was killed—not the sort of
stuff for the creation of a great hero. But when we look more closely, it is no wonder that so many
people admired him. Join us as Shallowford friend Joe T. Pugh tells the fascinating tale of a
peasant boy turned Baron, soldier, spy, and hero, whose name is remembered in the name of our
county (and who is buried on the lawn of a Presbyterian Church in Camden, South Carolina!).
6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Programs for March 17 & 24, and April 7 & 14. Two multi-week classes offered:
- Grief Group, led by Rev. Robby Carroll … Losses come in many forms. Death, chronic illness, terminal diagnosis, loss of a loved pet, and a host of other experiences can usher us into a period of grief. Even an anticipated loss can bring up feelings from past losses that linger in our lives. The late Henri Nouwen wrote, "In a society which is much more inclined to help you hide your pain rather than grow through it, it is necessary to make a very conscious effort to mourn." Meeting on March 31 as well, this five week experience will provide a safe, supportive and confidential place to journey through our losses and grief together. Join us and invite your friends.
- “Follow the Yellow Brick Road: The Spiritual Journey of The Wizard of Oz and Other Hollywood Classics,” led by Tom Buchanan … Join us for this five week exploration of the spiritual journey as self-discovery as shown in The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, and other Hollywood favorites. You’ll never see the movies in the same way again!
**Kid’s Activities with Pamela Marcus run concurrently in the Great Hall**
