Shallowford Presbyterian Church has a long history in children’s music, and this tradition continues today through our Children’s Choirs and Children’s Handbell Choir. At the core of our program is a belief that music is an important part of every child’s life, as well as an important part of the life of the church. Our children learn healthy singing technique, basic musicianship, and beginning musical literacy. The children also learn that, through music, even the youngest can lead in worship and share the gifts which God has given them.
All children are welcome in the Shallowford Children’s Choir program, and we hope you will join us soon. If you know a child who should be singing in our children’s choir, please contact Anne Thomas at [email protected], Director of Children’s Choirs.
Age 3 – Kindergarten
The children experience music in a variety of ways, including singing, dancing, playing instruments, and composing. They learn to sing in their head voice and keep a steady beat, as well as what it means to lead in worship and to praise God through singing. The children are introduced to traditional children’s church songs, basic hymns, and simple anthems. Cherub Choir meets during the 11:00 worship service on Sunday morning.
The children accompany Ms. Anne to choir immediately following the “Children’s Moment;” parents can pick up their singer in the Joyful Noise Room at the conclusion of the worship service.
1st – 2nd Grade
These children are continuing on the path to being good musicians and good leaders in the church. In choir, the singers learn to sing from the hymnal and are introduced to more hymns of the faith. They learn to read anthems and to prepare the anthems for worship. The children work on singing in unison and on reading basic rhythms and melodies. To aid in their musical learning, the children have opportunities to play the Orff instruments and to play singing games.
The Trinity Choir will meet on Wednesdays from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm in the Joyful Noise Room.
3rd – 5th Grade
As our oldest children’s choir, these singers take a leadership role in the Children’s Choir Program. They are the lead choir for Children’s Sunday, and they take the lead in the musical at the end of the year. Many of these children also share their talents on their private lesson instruments during the Christmas program and during other worship times. The repertoire for this choir includes more hymns of the faith, rounds, canons, and anthems. The children continue to sing in unison and are also introduced to singing in harmony. They expand their musical literacy through their anthems, the Orff instruments, and singing/reading games.
The Westminster Choir will meet on Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Joyful Noise Room.
Westminster Bell Choir
3rd – 5th Grade
A music background is not necessary to join this choir, but joining early in the fall is essential to learning the fundamentals of music. By the end of the year, all choir members know the basics and can read music.
The Wesminster Bell Choir will meet on Wednesdays from 5:15 pm to 6:00 pm in the sanctuary.
