Dr. Matthew Bumbach will join Shallowford’s team Sunday, January 22, as the Interim Director of Music Ministries, contracted through July 2023 as we search for a permanent Director of Music Ministries. Matthew will conduct the chancel and chapel choirs, lead the chapel choir tour, and be an integral part of our worship team throughout the spring.
Matthew comes to us with experience conducting youth and adult choirs as well as instrumentalists, both in school and church settings. His dissertation work centered on the intersection of bluegrass and choral music, including pieces like the Angel Band and Bluegrass Mass sung by the Shallowford Chancel Choir in recent years. Matthew and his family are moving from Clarksville, Arkansas, where Matthew was an assistant professor of music at University of the Ozarks. Matthew shares, “I cannot imagine a greater vocation than making music with God’s people.”

Dr. Matthew Bumbach is a sought-after conductor, composer, adjudicator, and clinician throughout North America, Europe, and Africa. Matthew has performed and recorded with such artists as Gloria Estefan, Time for Three, and Broadways star Rachel Potter. He has published research in NCCO’s The Choral Scholar, Chorus America’s Research Memorandum Series, ACDA’s The Choral Journal, and several state and regional journals. Matthew’s choral arrangements is published by Hal Leonard. In 2022, Dr. Bumbach coauthored A Quick Start Guide To Choral Singing (GIA Publications) with Dr. Dean Luethi. Matthew, his wife, Dr. Melissa Bumbach, and their twin daughters, Rachel and Selena and excited to join Shallowford Presbyterian Church.
